Anniversary Gift Etiquette

Whether it's the first or the 50th year of marriage, the tradition of giving anniversary gifts has been passed down from generation to generation. While any gift is acceptable, some are more traditional than others. Knowing the proper etiquette for who gives, and which gifts to give for each year of marriage, will make selecting a gift easier.

Who Gives
Wedding anniversary gifts during the first years of marriage are generally only exchanged between the couple. Outsiders may choose to purchase a small gift, however, it's not required. Gifts from outsiders are more acceptable during the 25th and 50th wedding anniversary than any other.

Types
Each year of marriage is celebrated by a different type of gift, and those wishing to use proper etiquette should stick to these items. Modern items include glassware, appliances, clocks, silverware and jewellry, while traditional items include food, fruit, wood, and crystal(glass).

Size
Anniversary gifts do not have to be of a certain size or value to be meaningful. Small trinkets that incorporate the theme are an acceptable gift when given between the couple, though as the years progress the value of the items should increase.

Considerations
When holding an anniversary party, the couple should not expect to be given gifts by their guests. In some cases, the couple may request that a monetary donation be given to their favorite charity in lieu of a gift.

Time Frame
Anniversary gifts, when exchanged between the couple should be given on the anniversary of their wedding day. When given by those outside the relationship, gifts should be given within a few days of the anniversary.
