FAQ

What is Krosno stemware?

Stemware is glasses on stems. They include large glasses for red wine, smaller glasses for white wine and still smaller glasses for sherry or port. Water glasses have traditionally been the largest stemmed glasses on the dinner table but we’re now using these glasses for red wine. Since decanting is out of vogue, people are pouring red wine into large glasses so it can breathe. Champagne used to be served in wide bowls but tall flutes have become more popular. A cocktail glass or martini glass has straight but slanted sides.

What are Krosno stems for?

The purpose of stems is so the warmth of our hands doesn’t alter the temperature of chilled white wine or champagne. Brandy balloons have short stems and are designed to be cupped in the hands to warm the spirit. Glasses for sparkling mineral water have straight vertical sides.

What is Glassware without stems called?

Glassware without stems is referred to as Barware. Whisky glasses are tumblers that come in two sizes: the smaller are called single old-fashioned (SOF) glasses and are for serving a single shot of spirit, while a double old-fashioned (DOF) glass is larger and used for serving two shots of spirits, with a mixer or ice. Highball (HB) glasses are taller glasses and at home people use them for orange juice, beer and water.

Do we still have “good” glasses & everyday ones?

No. those days have gone. Now people want good glasses they can use every day. There’s no use drinking a nice bottle of wine out of cheap glasses; you need glasses that will do the wine justice.

Will I be able to find Krosno replacements?

At Casa Giftware, we only carry the most popular handmade and machine made ranges from Poland. It’s nice to know any breakages can be replaced. We do our utmost to keep all of our ranges in stock. We’ll let you know if some ranges will be phased out.

How are the Decanters used?

There are two types: those with stoppers are used mainly to decant whiskey (and other spirits) for display in the drinks cabinet. Carafes without stoppers are for red wine decanted so it can breathe. The most popular wine decanter is a “Ship’s” decanter which has a low, shallow bowl and a stopper.

How do I care for my Krosno glasses?

Handmade stemware should always be hand washed holding the bowl rather than the stem. Use warm soapy water, rinse and place upside down on a paper towel or tea towel to dry. Modern dishwashers are fine, as glass withstands hot temperatures but make sure your glassware does not touch others items and don’t over do the dishwashing powder. To best care for your glassware, always minimize the pressure on the stem and never store upside down or the smoothness of the drinking rim could be compromised.

Some more interesting facts:

• Small liqueur glasses with straight edges (with or without stems) are used for shots.

• Champagne flutes help to retain the bubbles longer, and evoke a sense of celebration.

 • Filling red wine glasses to the widest part of the glass exposes the maximum surface area and allows the  wine to breathe. White wine glasses should also be filled only to the widest part.

 • To gauge the superior clarity and vibrancy of our glass from Poland, put it alongside a regular glass.

 • Avoid coloured glasses that don’t allow you to see the colour of the wine.
